The only official language of Russia is Russian. It is the only official language throughout the country.
Indo-European languages are spoken by almost 3 billion native speakers, the largest number by far for any recognized language family. Of the 20 languages with the largest numbers of native speakers. Peoples and a subgroup of Indo-European languages, have speakers in most of Eastern Europe, much of the Balkans, parts of Central Europe, and the northern part of Asia.

Slavonic language closely related to Ukrainian and Belarusian with about 277
million speakers mainly in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
- The earliest known writing in Russia dates from the 10th century and was found at Novgorod. The main languages written on them in an early version of the Cyrillic alphabet were Old Russian and Old Church Slavonic.
- Russian literature started to flower during the
19th century when Tolstoi, Dostoyevskii, Gogol and Pushkin were active.
